Google's New Program to Track Shoppers Sparks a Federal Privacy Complaint

A prominent privacy rights watchdog is asking the Federal Trade Commission to investigate a new Google advertising program that ties consumers' online behavior to their purchases in brick-and-mortar stores.

The legal complaint from the Electronic Privacy Information Center, to be filed with the FTC on Monday, alleges that Google is newly gaining access to a trove of highly-sensitive information - the credit and debit card purchases records of the majority of US consumers - without revealing how they got the information or giving consumers' meaningful ways to opt-out. Moreover, the group claims that the search giant is relying on a secretive technical method to protect the data - a method that should be audited by outsiders and is likely vulnerable to hacks or other data breaches.

"Google is seeking to extend its dominance from the online world to the real, offline world, and the FTC really needs to look at that," said Marc Rotenberg, the organisation's executive director.

Google called its advertising approach "common" and said it had "invested in building a new, custom encryption technology that ensures users' data remains private, secure and anonymous."

Snapdeal Terminates Talks With Flipkart, Will Pursue an Independent Path

Snapdeal on Monday called off the $950 million-takeover (over Rs. 6,000 crores) by Flipkart, apparently over differences in valuation and terms of what could possibly have been the largest deal in the Indian e-commerce space.Discussions to acquire the beleagured Snapdeal by Flipkart were initiated in March but contours of the deal could not reach a finality even after several rounds.

"Snapdeal has been exploring strategic options over the last several months. The company has now decided to pursue an independent path and is terminating all strategic discussions as a result," a Snapdeal spokesperson said in a statement, without naming Flipkart. The spokesperson added that the company will now pursue "Snapdeal 2.0" which is expected to help Snapdeal be "financially self-sustainable".

Japanese conglomerate SoftBank, which holds close to 35 percent stake in Snapdeal and one that was driving the discussions, said it supports entrepreneurs and their vision."...we respect the decision to pursue an independent strategy. We look forward to the results of the Snapdeal 2.0 strategy, and to remaining invested in the vibrant Indian e-commerce space," a SoftBank spokesperson said.

iPhone 8 Bezel-Less Display, Facial Recognition Features Spotted in HomePod Firmware

Apple itself has left a clue about what you could expect in at least one of the iPhone models it plans to launch later this year, expected to be the iPhone 8. Mentioned in the smart speaker HomePod's firmware is a face unlock feature for the iPhone, which would allow customers to get past the lock screen by just looking at the phone.

Spotted by developer Steve Troughton-Smith, the HomePod's firmware codebase, which Apple published recently, has several references of "BKFaceDetect", which presumably stands for BiometricKit. The codebase also mentions infrared camera, which could be there to detect a user's face in the dark.

The existence of these references lends further credibility to several reports from earlier that suggested that Apple is planning to ditch the Touch ID fingerprint scanner on at least one of its upcoming iPhone models. A recent report said that Apple was planning to include an infrared camera for scanning the face of users. The company is also believed to be working on more than one iPhone models for launch this year, with many reports pointing to iPhone 8, iPhone 7s, and iPhone 7s Plus.

Windows 10 S Now Available to Test for MSDN Developers

In a new development, Microsoft has now allowed Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) subscribers to test its recently announced Windows 10 Soperating system. Announced for schools and education users, this version will enable developers to test their apps and see if they run properly.

This version is available in an ISO file, and MSDN subscribers can easily download it and install it on their systems to run their test. They can also ascertain whether Windows 10 S is suitable for school kids and education-focused areas.

In a bid to take on Google’s Chrome OS, Microsoft launched the Windows 10 S operating system for education in May this year. Windows 10 S is tied to the Windows Store, which means students can only run apps downloaded from the Store. It is built keeping in mind classrooms, which means students won't be exposed to potentially dangerous apps, while every app is certified by Microsoft to ensure there is no performance drop over time. Several education-focused features will also be found on the Edge browser and Microsoft apps like Office 365 will also see more school-friendly features in the future as well.

iPod nano, shuffle Discontinued as Apple Looks to Simplify Lineup

After years of being outsold by the iPhone, the venerable iPod has taken a big step toward eventual oblivion. Apple said Thursday it was discontinuing two of the cheapest iPod models: the nano and shuffle.

The two products have been removed from the Apple online store and will vanish from retail locations as well. Apple demoted the iPod's placement in its retail stores a couple of years ago, moving the devices to the company's accessory shelves. The $149 nano and $49 shuffle were last updated with new colors in 2015, but the nano hasn't been revamped since 2012 while the shuffle hasn't been redesigned since 2010.

"Today, we are simplifying our iPod lineup with two models of iPod touch now with double the capacity starting at just $199 and we are discontinuing the iPod shuffle and iPod nano," Apple said in a statement.

Splatoon 2 Nintendo Switch Review

Splatoon 2 is another of Nintendo’s big game releases for the Nintendo Switch. It’s the successor to Splatoon, which was released for the Wii U two years ago. Splatoon 2 is a primarily a third-person shooter that takes place in a fictional world where Inklings are the dominant species.

These Inklings have guns that shoot paint, bombs that spread paint when they explode, and they can transform into squids and swim through paint. As you can tell, paint is an element core to the game's traversal - you keep shooting and run out of colour, then you just need to transform into a squid and keep swimming around it to refill. A few seconds later you can return to shooting, splatting, and firing bombs. This is the basic gameplay mechanic across all modes. Splatoon 2 retains Nintendo’s signature art style that makes even a shooting game appear kid-friendly. Even though you’ll be throwing paint bombs and shooting, the game never feels violent.

Splatoon 2 supports motion controls and traditional controls, but the initial tutorial makes you use the motion controls to aim and look around. We found this quite disorienting and weren’t comfortable using motion controls at all. We tried this on both the Nintendo Pro Controller and the Joy-Con controller, and didn’t like it on either of them.

Jeff Bezos Briefly Surpasses Bill Gates as World's Richest

A surge in Amazon.com shares Thursday morning in advance of the online retailer's earnings report briefly propelled founder Jeff Bezos past Bill Gates as the world's richest person.

Shares of the online retailer traded at $1,055.37 at 2:17pm in New York, after climbing as high as $1,083.31, which gave Bezos a net worth of $92.3 billion (roughly Rs. 5,92,798 crores). Gates had a net worth of $90.8 billion (roughly Rs. 5,83,122 crores) as of the Wednesday close. In afternoon trading, Bezos remains ranked second on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, behind the Microsoft co-founder. Gates, 61, has held the top spot since May 2013.

Investors and analysts, in addition to watching Amazon's progress in taking market share in categories such as apparel and groceries, will be scrutinizing how many new subscriptions the retailer sold for its $99-a-year Amazon Prime service, which offers delivery discounts and video and music streaming. Prime shoppers spend more than customers who don't have a membership.

"Amazon Prime is why so much physical retail is going away," said Michael Pachter, a Wedbush Securities Inc. analyst who has a buy rating on the stock and a price target of $1,250. "Anyone who joins Prime shops in retail stores 10 percent less, and that number will keep accelerating as Amazon adds more inventory."

"Zuckerberg's wealth is largely tied up in Facebook stock, meaning it rises and falls along with the company's shares," the report noted.

The social networking giant has been showing positive results since the beginning of 2017. Its shares have risen more than 50 per cent and reached two billion monthly users across the globe.

Nokia 3 Review

The Nokia 3, the most affordable of the three new Nokia-branded Android smartphones, was launched in India last month. It is the first smartphone with the Nokia name to hit the Indian market in a long time, but it's worth pointing out that it hasn't been manufactured by Nokia itself. The company that once dominated global smartphone sales is getting a second shot at the mobile business thanks to a brand licensing agreement with HMD Global, a Helsinki-based company run largely by former Nokia and Microsoft employees. As per the deal announced last year, HMD Global has an exclusive global license to create and sell Nokia-branded phones for 10 years. The company has been betting heavily on the Nokia brand's power, and fans have been looking forward to the devices which are now finally here.

The rebooted Nokia 3310 was the first to be made available in India and received mixed response. The other two Android smartphones are the Nokia 5 and Nokia 6, which are yet to be made available in India. These four Nokia phones were the biggest announcements at MWC 2017, but it will only translate into sales if the products are good enough.

HMD Global has been marketing the Nokia 3 to buyers looking for a good design and "pure Android with regular updates" at a budget price. The Nokia 3 has been priced aggressively to take on the some of the heavyweights in the Indian market. However, it will have a tough fight ahead of it, as HMD Global needs to find its place in the Indian market and compete with popular phones like the Xiaomi Redmi 4, Moto G5, and Yu Yureka Black. The Nokia 3 is being marketed as the "Android phone with all the smartphone essentials" but will that be enough? We take a look.
